| | August 24: Johns Hopkins incorporates several entities, providing the groundwork for his university, his hospital and his Colored Children’s Orphan Asylum. Later, in a letter to the trustees, Hopkins writes that the hospital must provide for "[t]he indigent sick of this city and its environs, without regard to sex, age, or color.” Regarding the Colored Children’s Orphan Asylum, Hopkins’ will states that he is interested in the “reception, maintenance” and “education” of colored children, and in the provision of "proper and respectable employment” for them “when such children shall arrive at a suitable age."
