1960 Dr. Roland Smoot becomes a member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Outpatient Staff. His new appointment makes him the third Black faculty member of the Medical School. In 1966, Dr. Smoot becomes on of the first African American to obtain admitting privileges at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Ernest Bates, admitted to the School of Arts and Sciences, becomes the first African American student to room on the Homewood campus. Mr. Bates now serves on the Board of Trustees.
