| | An African American wife and mother of four small children, Miriam DeCosta Sugarmon received her M.A. from Hopkins in 1960. She returns to Baltimore and enters the doctoral program of the Romance Languages Department in 1965 and completes the course work for her Ph.D. in just one year. Dr. Miriam DeCosta Sugarmon Willis goes on to have a distinguished career as a scholar, a professor of Spanish and chairperson of the Department of Romance Languages at Howard University. She retires from the University of Maryland in 1999. Dr. DeCosta-Willis has authored many books and continues to be an outspoken Civil Rights leader and advocate.
